Came to N.S.W. 1857, where in 1859 and 1865 he held the office of Solicitor General. He lectured in General Jurisprudence at University of Sydney from 1858 until his appointment as Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court in 1865. His second son was Lawrence Hargrave.
